Vidant Medical Center, a 861-bed tertiary referral facility, provides comprehensive acute, intermediate, rehabilitation and outpatient health services to more than 1.4 million people in 29 counties. In an average year, about 44,000 inpatients and more than 261,000 outpatients are treated at Vidant Medical Center. In a typical year, nearly 4,000 babies are born at the hospital. The clinical staff includes more than 600 physicians and 1,400 nurses. Vidant Medical Center is one of four academic medical centers in North Carolina and is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health. Vidant Medical Center, considered a regional resource for all levels of health services and information, serves as a teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
The East Carolina Heart Institute is collaboration between Vidant Medical Center, East Carolina University and cardiovascular experts in private practice, academic medicine and research. It is the first institute in North Carolina devoted exclusively to education, research, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The primary facilities that make up the Heart Institute are located on the campuses of Vidant Medical Center and ECU's Brody School of Medicine. The East Carolina Heart Institute at Vidant Medical Center is a six-story, 120 cardiovascular bed facility that offers catheterization, vascular and electro-physiology laboratories, cardiovascular operating suites and advanced diagnostics. The ECU facility includes outpatient diagnostics, physician clinics, and research and state-of-the-art conference space.
